原文

"We are told that the tools necessary for basic writing are a pencil and a piece of paper and the desire to put something down. But I am not sure that the desire is so simple as it might seem. The impulse to write things down is a peculiarly compulsive one, inexplicable to those who do not share it, useful only accidentally, only secondarily, in the way that any compulsion tries to justify itself."

— Joan Didion, Slouching Towards Bethlehem

"We are told that the tools necessary for basic writing are a pencil and a piece of paper and the desire to put something down."

  • the desire to put something down:想把东西"落到纸上"的欲望。

"But I am not sure that the desire is so simple as it might seem."

  • as it might seem:表面看来。比 "as it seems" 更温和,留有余地。

"The impulse to write things down is a peculiarly compulsive one, inexplicable to those who do not share it."

  • inexplicable to those who do not share it:对不写日记的人来说,无法解释。

"useful only accidentally, only secondarily, in the way that any compulsion tries to justify itself."

  • in the way that any compulsion tries to justify itself:就像任何强迫行为都会为自己找理由。

Didion
